Merry Christmas!

(South 13th Street, Philadelphia, by your humble blogkeeper)

"`A fellow who'd worked for him accused him of stealing some kind of idea or invention from him. Rosewater was his name. He tried to shake Wynant down by threatening to shoot him, bomb his house, kidnap his children, cut his wife's throat — I don't know what all — if he didn't come across. We never caught him — must've scared him off. Anyway, the threats stopped and nothing happened.'

"Nora stopped drinking to ask: `Did Wynant really steal it?'

"`Tch, tch, tch,' I said. `This is Christmas Eve: try to think good of your fellow man.'"

Great.

A good incentive to read "The Thin Man," which I now have on reserve at the library.

Kathy, I figured this post would catch your attention, since I know you'd been asking about "The Thin Man."

Funny thing is, my memory played tricks on me. I was sure the book opened on New Year's Eve, not Christmas Eve. That must be because Nick and Nora Charles are partying all the time.

Pete: As an ex-member in good standing of the Dunkin' Donuts clientele circa 1989-91, I was surprised to find your blog.

Great stuff.

Need more about Australia--every other city's been covered so when will melbourne noir appear???

I'm probably the only non-Australian in Pennsylvania who can name FOUR major mystery writers writing in Melbourne today. I'll give you Peter Temple and Garry Disher. Who are two more???

Best wishes for the holidays,
John Wirebach

John, I'm gobsmacked, though I think that particular gang had members only in bad standing.

I have long thought that Melbourne was due for a noir book of its own.
After all, look who lives and writes there: Shane Maloney, Kerry Greenwood, Adrian McKinty and Adrian Hyland to start. And the city's crime-fiction history predates Sherlock Holmes.

Merry Christmas, and keep on reading!

A holiday treat:

Here is a link to an ode to a crime-writing, whiskey-drinking St. Nick, by the terrific author of "City of Dragons," Kelli Stanley.
