Class distinctions

A nice comment on romance and love from Mehmet Murat Somer's The Kiss Murder:

"My man intervened. `Calm down, lady ... '

"Ay! I don't think much of men who use the term `lady,' either. It reeks of the lower classes. The sort who imagine romance can only end in marriage."
And yes, that cover illustration is meant to evoke Audrey Hepburn.

It is. But then, one would expect no less from a novel whose protagonist is a computer security expert by day, part-owner of a transvestite nightclub by night, and an expert in aikido at all times.

I am very very fascinated by such glimpses of class distinctions in fictions of other nations. This was a delicious succint line.

I suspect that author had a twinkle in his eye and a smile when he wrote that line. The line is rather pregnant with meaning, I'd say.
