Noir at the Bar reading series debuts this Sunday!

kicks off Philadelphia's Noir at the Bar with a reading and Q&A Sunday, June 1, at 6 p.m.
Duane's noir thrillers include, most recently, Severance Package (St. Martin's Minotaur). His previous novel, The Blonde, has just been optioned by actress Michelle Monaghan. He's also the writer for Marvel Comics' monthly X-Men title, Cable, and in July, he takes over scripting duties for Immortal Iron Fist. Until recently he was editor-in-chief of the Philadelphia City Paper, and he has worked at Philly Mag, Men's Health and Details. He's a native Philadelphian, and his hippie parents named him after one of the Allman Brothers — the dead one, of course.

Hi,

Saw you on Blogs of Note. I'm from India and am very interested in detective fiction (esp by women writers, esp with women sleuths). Your blog is a huge learning experience for me, as I am unfamiliar with many of the authors I read about here. I'm more of a Agatha Christie/P D James/Aleaxander McCall Smith reader, no real noir experience, unless you count Georges Simenon's The Stain on the Snow and some such.

Thanks for the variety of info I got from your blog, will definitely come again.

Welcome, and thanks for the kind words. Noir is a notoriously hard concept to define, but some of Simenon's non-Maigret books would fit the bill. (I see, by the way, that The Stain on the Snow is to be made into a movie.)

Have you read Patricia Highsmith? And, on the Alexander McCall Smith side of things, do you know Colin Cotterill's books?

Michael: The only advice I can offer is post regularly, and realize that people may be reading even if they don't post comments.

Ahmad: Welcome. Yours might be the first comment I have had from Indonesia. What detective authors do you like to read?
